Ever felt like there is a product that just keeps following you?
You check out a type of power tool or an online-course and before you know it your Internet feed feels haunted for at least a week. You see the same ads everywhere you go.
It’s called ‘retargeting’ and it’s a shame that it’s value is not maximised. Because not only can it work, if you use it right it will give you the best return on investment for your marketing budget.
Let me show you how to use this in a way that isn't annoying and doesn't feel like harassment.
Unless you're selling something like bread or milk, it's unlikely your clients just randomly buy from you.
There’s going to be a lead up time. The time period where your prospects weigh their options.
The fancy way of saying this is: ‘customer journey’. (I always thought that was a bit pretentious, but let’s just roll with it for now).
The rough process for almost every product or service is as follows:
Pretty simple, right? So why even care?
Because the quicker you can position yourself in front of the prospect… the better the chance of conversion and the less it costs you to make a sale. It’s win-win-win.
Just think about it..
If they find you at the fifth stage it's likely they’re just price shopping. You’re entering the race too late.
You want to get to them in stage 3. They start looking for solutions and BANG, your right there.
Don't worry there's good news.. If you’re doing marketing the right way and following our advice, there’s already a likely chance that they’re finding you in stage 3.
The bad news? The attention span of an average prospect is terrible and the chance that they remember you later on is dreadful.
But we can fix that..
If someone is considering buying your product or service and you're the only one that can talk to them any time they have a question about it… you’ll probably be able to turn them into a customer.
Using retargeting strategically lets you almost do exactly that.
We're not going to show people the same picture/video and the same ad over and over again, we're going to do something else.
We’re going to show them new information and content they have never even seen before. Maybe we record three, four, five videos, each highlighting something that your potential client needs to know. Useful info that should actually help them.
And then we retarget the people that saw our ads before, this time, showing them new information, helping them out long before money even changes hands.
when someone helps you out without asking you something in return… What's your initial reaction? For most people its two things:
Makes complete sense. But once you realise that they're not about to ask for something in return, something else kicks in.
Obviously this doesn’t mean they can call you and ask you to bail them out of jail. Doesn’t mean you’re gonna carry around furniture for them when they change home.
However there is a seed planted in your mind that says: ‘this person did something for us. If we get a chance to help we should try to return the favour’.
Reciprocity is built into our psyche . And we can use it (in a good way) when we do our marketing.
The trick to help people is by actually helping them.
Crazy stuff. I know.
But it does work. Plus, it makes selling so much easier.
If you get this right you won’t have to try “hard close” to anyone. By the time they talk to you they already respect you! Because you were already there for them, ‘doing them favours’ when they needed you.
I'll write more on this principle in the future. For now, take action and try to experiment with retargeting to see how it works out for you.
